BIOGRAPHY
Formed in 1993 , THE
NIGHTPORTERS are currently one of the hottest new Blues acts
working the U.K. circuit.
With a unique repertoire of 1950's style R&B , the band features...
Ian Roberts ... Vocals / Guitar / Harmonica
Martin Vowles ... Guitar / Backing Vocals
Chris Robbins-Davey ... Double Bass
Kevin Crowe ... Drums / Backing Vocals
Sharp suits, valve-rattling guitars, and a great sense of showmanship,
make this top Westcountry outfit one of the hardest acts to follow. Event South West
Magazine described them as thus...
The Nightporters have very quickly fused themselves into a
ridiculously tight outfit that seem to approach blues and rockabilitv from every which way
and are able to squeeze something unique yet utterly listenable and danceable out of
everything they play.
In December 1995 the band launched their own beer. The Nightporter is
a strong dark ale ( 5.2% ) especially
brewed for the band and available from Mill Brewery of Newton Abbot. A picture of the band
features on the pump handle.
During 1996 The Nightporters recorded a session at BBC Pebble Mill for
The Paul Jones Blues Show on Radio 2. The date of broadcast was January 30th 1997. In the
same year they appeared several times on Westcountry TV.
In the summer of 1996 the band undertook their first national British tour. Venues included...
The BIRMINGHAM International Jazz Festival
The WOLVERHAMPTON Blues Festival
The Great British R&B Festival, COLNE , LANCASHIRE
The NORTON PARK Blues Festival , DEVON
The December 1996 issue of Blueprint Magazine concluded
"Live, The Nightporters are outstanding entertainment. If you
want a rave up, The Nightporters are the band to supply up."
This year The Nightporters appeared at most of the U.K.'s major Blues
Festivals . They played The BURNLEY Blues Festival for the first time and performed
several shows at Ronnie Scott's , BIRMINGHAM . They also travelled to DUBLIN, IRELAND to
play for three consecutive nights at The 1997 Guinness Temple Bar Blues Festival . A
European tour is being scheduled for November / December.
A five track cassette EP "Everybody's in the Mood "was released in 1995 , followed by "Love
in Vain " in 1996. The Nightporters' debut CD "Feelin'
Good" was recorded April 1997 at Sawmills Studio , Golant, Fowey, Cornwall.
Sawmills is one of the U.K.'s top residential recording studios . Recent albums by Oasis
and Supergrass have been recorded there . The CD was launched July 1997 on the Wang
Recording Label (Wang CD / MC 001). It can be purchased at all Our Price or Virgin stores
nationally. It is also available mail order from the above address (CD £11/ Cassette £7
inclusive of p&p).
Dave Treharne of Gemini Radio said this
"The Nightporters have become a phenomenally polished outfit who
are pushing out the boundaries of rockability, blues and boogie with nods to long
forgotten artists who now might well wish they had the wit to record their material the
way The Nightporters have welded it."
The following brief description can be used for promoting The Nightporters in Listing Magazines etc
"Sharp suits and valve-rattling fifties blues from this highly
rated Westcountrv outfit.
